The supreme court in Alabama USA has just ruled that frozen embryos have the rights of children, “children outside the womb,” and has allowed wrongful death lawsuits against a fertility clinic to proceed. What happened was a passing visitor patient was curious and took a canister with embryos out of a freezer and dropped it. The embryos died. The parents of the embryos are suing the IVF company. As a result of the ruling, two IVF companies have stopped providing services in Alabama. This is an important decision that recognizes the gravity of freezing human embryos. Just like other scientific discoveries like contraception, and abortive pills, IVF seeks to take God’s power of procreation into human hands. As Pope John Paul II said, this is profoundly unlawful and to say, or think, otherwise is, in effect, to claim that situations arise when it is lawful not to recognize God as God. Chief Justice Parker wrote, “Human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God, who views the destruction of His image as an affront to Himself.” This case opens a door to the reality of what is happening with IVF. Please God, let this be the beginning of a realization that embryos are individuals with a soul and must be cared for, not subjected to creation in a test tube or put in any risk.
